On February 1, 2024, UAS7 organized one installation of the #DWIHzeitgeist series on “Science Diplomacy in Practice”. The webinar brought together UAS7 science diplomacy practitioners: Prof. Dr. Lars Ribbe from TH Köln UAS and Prof. Dr. iur. Ekkehard Strauß from HWR Berlin, as well as Prof. Melissa Bilec from our partner, the University of Pittsburgh.

This year, the hybrid event took place from 17 to 28th of October, gathering more than 140 students from 12 universities from all over the world. The multicultural teams worked hard to develop solutions tackling the Sustainable Development Goal 11: make cities and human settlements inclusive, safe, resilient and sustainable.

On October 6 and 7, 2022 the Future Forum: Fabricating the Future took place at avangarde event space Company, and with strong representation from HAW Hamburg University of Applied Sciences, our partner Drexel University, and of course, a broad range of relevant US and German researchers, teachers, designers, producers, journalists and more. Our speakers got a chance to connect and network with US, Canadian and other German high-impact fashion folks and politicians. 

The last two years changed the world and with it changed the parameters of applied sciences. At a hybrid University-Industry talk, sponsored by the Otto and Fran Walter Foundation, academic, business and industry leaders from three continents shared their ideas on university-industry relations and Innovation Powered by Applied Sciences.

With hundreds of respected universities to choose from as well as its location in the heart of Europe, it’s no wonder that Germany consistently ranks as one of the most popular countries in the world in which to study. In fact, Germany has been ranked as the fourth most popular destination for international students in the world (after the US, UK and Australia). Moving the Cities is an international event that has been reoccurring annually since 2018. It unites students, professors, industry representatives and universities from all over the world. The goal of Moving the Cities is to look at regional challenges that cities face from an international perspective. To do just that, 135+ students from 6 countries collaborated digitally for one week. 28 internationally mixed teams with participants from Brazil, Chile, Germany, Colombia, England and the USA competed in the final pitches to convince the international jury of their solution.

The rapid development of cities poses unique challenges at a time when urban areas worldwide are threatened by climate and environmental change. How can we make cities smarter and more sustainable using the latest technologies from renewable energy to smart grids? The one-hour live web-talk, Rethinking Cities contributed to this ongoing dialogue by addressing issues of sustainability, smart technologies, governance, and design from the perspective of the communities that inhabit these spaces.

On November 5 and 6, UAS7 had the opportunity to participate in the Annual Goethe Institut "Career Booster Germany" - per 2020 restrictions in virtual form. This year, UAS7 was represented in three separate sessions, presenting Study Opportunities at Universities of Applied Sciences and graduate programs. Additionally, Nathanial Long - SIP alumnus - participated in an Alumni Panel Discussion about Studying in Germany.
