Science Diplomacy

"Science Diplomacy" refers to the interactions between science, governments and diplomacy, usually with the goal to drive important research and education collaborations to further relevant global goals.

UAS7 and its institutions engage in large national and international networks. UAS7 New York specifically connects researchers, faculty and students across the Atlantic, facilitating in-person and virtual collaborations and exchanges. In Germany, we work with the government to steer education as a public good in response to developing educational ideas, societal and global issues. In North America we work with partner universities, transatlantic organizations and other stakeholders to connect our researchers internationally for best possible impact, and to find suitable partners for our other programs and activities. Our close partners in the US are Drexel University, the University of Pittsburgh and suny universities

Among our programs are representative projects about Germany and German universities as a destination for studies and research, study and internship exchange programs as well as virtual faculty collaborations.

Sustainable Development Goals in our Institutions

Sustainable development goals are very important for UAS7 and at our institutions. In the following we will present some selected initiatives and research foci:

Logo HWR Berlin

The Institute for Sustainability founded by HWR Berlin University of Applied Sciences envisions the consolidation of research and teaching in sustainable science and economics. The focus on the implementation of environmental conscious content in teaching, and the intensification of research through joining projects, support the main goal of increasing impact in education, companies, and organizations. Hosting conferences and events and issuing members’ publications is crucial for spreading awareness and divulging achievements.

The six research clusters at the Bremen City University of Applied Sciences stand for interdisciplinary and cross-faculty networking of competences and the development of solutions for social challenges together with cooperation partners. The clusters concern "Blue Sciences" (sciences related to maritime questions), aerospace related research profiles, digital transformation, quality of life, and regional changes, and the consequences of extreme events. Research connects basic research with applied focus points.

The Hamburg University of Applied Sciences instituted the Sustainable Development and Climate Change Management Research and Transfer Centre, which specializes in sustainability and climate change, including the interconnections between climate and health. The center is part of an admirable network that links various academies to discuss and implement solutions aiming to make the SDGs a reality.

The Sustainability Initiative at TH Köln - University of Applied Sciences is a cross-faculty initiative towards a more sustainable university, and implemented jointly with national and international partners.

TH Köln features three main research profiles: Integrative Society and ResilienceDigital Work and Living environments, and Sustainable Management and Resources.

The International Staff Week "Perspectives on Sustainability" - just passed this November - was one of many initiatives FH Münster University of Applied Sciences launched to complement the university's “Year of Sustainability” 2022. The event targets all interested employees of universities and other scientific institutions, hosting twelve different nations from Europe, India as well as the overseas department of French Guiana, among others. Together, participants discussed Ideas and approaches for how universities worldwide may contribute to a reduction in resource consumption.
Moving the Cities is a UAS7 wide annual event that originated at FH Münster. The initiative involves institutions throughout three continents including our partners in North and South America and aims to bring students together in international teams where they face the challenge of developing solutions based on SDGs.

Smart Green - Big Data and eco-innovative resource use in the NSR Greenhouse industry - greening the growth in horticultural production is one of many public-funded international research projects from Osnabrück University of Applied Sciences. The faculty of agriculture and forestry collaborated transnationally with the purpose of developing eco-innovations in upgraded methods to accomplish source reduction (energy, water and chemicals) and decrease CO2 emissions.
