Internship at the UAS7 Liaison Office New York
Hi Everyone!
My name is Meredith Nuber and I am the current intern at the UAS7 liaison Office in New York City. In addition to interning at UAS7, I am a studying to earn a master’s degree in international education from New York University. Within the field of International Ed., I am mainly interested in study abroad and cultural exchange. During my undergraduate years, I became really interested in Germany as I studied the German language at university and spent a very exciting and memorable semester studying abroad in Munich. After my graduation from college, I returned to Germany, spending two years living in and around Munich, one of which was spent working as an English teaching assistant with the Fulbright U.S. student program. Thus, working for UAS7 and their efforts to create and promote student exchange between America and Germany, something that I have personally participated in and understand the importance of, was an exciting opportunity that I could not pass up.
After meeting the director of the UAS7 NYC office, Britta Schumacher, through one of my professors at NYU, I quickly began working at the office and jumped right into the hectic UAS7 Study and Internship Program (SIP) application process. While working through the applications and advising potential SIP students, I learned quite a bit about what is needed for a successful application and how best to advise and communicate with students as they prepare for a semester or year abroad. I also help to plan events for UAS7, help to organize social media platforms, correspond with potential students on a daily basis, update the UAS7 website, and help Britta Schumacher with various daily tasks around the office.
Although this is a short-term internship (it will last a total of three months), I feel that I have already learned and gained so much knowledge during my time with UAS7 that will benefit my future career in international education. I have gained practical knowledge and skills about what it takes to administer cross-cultural exchange and study abroad programs, how to communicate well with students and help them through any challenges they may face, and how to prioritize and implement daily office tasks. I have made great connections to people in the field, both in the U.S. and in Germany. It has been great working with Britta Schumacher and the UAS7 team in New York and Berlin.
I have truly enjoyed this internship opportunity thus far. The amazing view from the office window doesn’t hurt either!
