Do you know Porto Alegre?
Porto Alegre is the capital of Rio Grande do Sul, a state in Brazil’s south region, where the campus of two partners of UAS7 are located: Unisinos and PUCRS. It has an estimated population of 1,492,530 inhabitants. The city was officially founded on March 26, 1772. Although many years before, it was already inhabited by originary people like Guaranis, Charruas, Minuanos and Tapes.
The settlement of European immigrants, however, began in 1752, with the arrival of 60 Azorean Portuguese couples. At the same period, the African diaspora took place, which consisted of the forced migration of African people, as slaves to Brazil. From 1824, it began to receive immigrants from all over the world, in particular Germans, Italians, Spaniards, Poles, Jews and Lebanese. This history of multiple ethnic, religious and linguistic origins makes Porto Alegre a cosmopolitan and multicultural city, rich in diversity and plurality.
Nowadays the city has the biggest latin america skate park and one of the most beautiful sunsets in Brazil. The capital of “gaúchos” (how people born in the state of Rio Grande do Sul are called) has several tourist attractions for visitors, as well as various cultural activities.
